7.4 Module Definitions#

This section defines each DICOM Module used in the Dental domain in detail, specifying the standards used and the information defined.

This normative section contains a description of the DICOM tags which are necessary to fully describe orthodontic views (photographs).

This section also specifies the values allowed in the DICOM CID (Content IDs) tables, highlighting those values which are relevant to the orthodontic domain.

7.4.1 General (Common) Module Constraints#

This section contains IHE constraints on Modules that are common across multiple DICOM Composite IODs:

7.4.1.1 Patient Module#

This normative section contains extensions to DICOM tags defined in the Patient module which are relevant to orthodontic photography.

Patient’s Name

(0010,0010)

R+

IHE requires that this element be present. This element is one of the primary patient identifying elements, and assuch, all DICOM objects with the same Study Instance UID, must have the same value in this element.Equipment which creates new series based on other series (i.e., resampled series, new structure sets, plans, etc.) must preserve the value of this element to adhere to this profile. If anonymized, shall follow DICOM’s Attribute Confidentiality Profiles (Normative) in DICOM PS3.15 Chapter E.

Patient ID

(0010,0020)

R+

See Patient ID (0010,0010). If anonymized, shall follow DICOM’s Attribute Confidentiality Profiles (Normative) in DICOM PS3.15 Chapter E.

Patient’s Birth Date

(0010,0030)

See Patient ID (0010,0010). If anonymized, shall follow DICOM’s Attribute Confidentiality Profiles (Normative) in DICOM PS3.15 Chapter E.

If anonymized, shall follow DICOM’s Attribute Confidentiality Profiles (Normative) in DICOM PS3.15 Chapter E.

7.4.1.2 General Study Module#

This normative section contains extensions to DICOM tags defined in the General Study module DICOM tags which are relevant to orthodontic photography.

Attribute Description

Study Date

(0008,0020)

R+

Shall include the date of image acquisition

Accession Number

(0008,0050)

O+

The accession number should be a number that is generated by the system which generates the request to acquire specific images. In the workflow of an orthodontic practice, this would typically be done by the practice management system. Examples for what to use could be: the ID of the request for performing a procedure, or the ID of the appointment during which it would be expected to acquire this image. Although not ideal, in some cases where Modality Worklists are not used, the ID of the encounter during which this image was acquired may also be used.

Study Description

(0008,1030)

RC+

Shall be present if orthodontic progress is known and set in the Acquisition Context Sequence (0040,0555). The value SHOULD represent the orthodontic_progress, in a human readable form. The string SHOULD be limited to 16 characters. If a Study Description is already present, the system MAY prefix the existing Study Description with this one.

7.4.1.3 Patient Study Module#

This normative section contains extensions to DICOM tags defined in the Patient Study module .

  • Extensions in Table 7.4.1.3.1.1-1 are from ADA Standard No. 1114 Rev. ??. Section 6.1

7.4.1.3.1 Guidance on Encoding Reason for Visit#

In orthodontics, the reason for a visit is typically obtained from the Practice Management System (PMS) and is associated with an appointment. Examples include “Initial Consultation”, “Follow-up”, “Debanding”, or “Adjustment”. These values represent the reason for the patient’s visit and do not necessarily describe any imaging-specific procedures.

This differs from Requested Procedure Description (0032,1060), which is used in the Modality Worklist to describe the image-specific procedure to be performed. See Requested Procedure.

Reason for Visit

(0032,1066)

RC+

When a coded value from the PMS is not available to encode in the Reason for Visit Code Sequence (0032,1067), then Reason for Visit (0032,1066) MAY be used alone. This may occur when the PMS only provides free text for the appointment type. This attribute can contain a character string that MAY include one or more paragraphs, and is considered “unlimited” in length. The actual limit is two bytes less than 4GB. Refer to DICOM PS3.5: Section 6.2 “DICOM Value Representation (VR)” for more details.

Reason for Visit Code Sequence

(0032,1067)

RC+

If the PMS uses values from a set, such as those used for billing, or a pre-programmed or customizable list, then (0032,1067) SHALL be used. This sequence allows multiple codes, but for orthodontic visits, typically only one code is used.

7.4.1.4 General Series Module#

This normative section contains extensions to DICOM tags defined in the General Series module for orthodontic image acquisition.

(0008,0070)

Device UID

(0018,1002)

RC+

Shall include the imaging device identifier in the DICOM header when the system generating the image knows which device was used. If the device is unknown—such as when an image is reconstructed from a 3D volume without device metadata, or when a film radiograph, photographic slide, negative or print is rescanned and the original capture device cannot be determined—then the imaging device element may be omitted.
